Afghan national security forces have killed fifty-five Taliban militants and injured 36 others during cleanup operations across the country over the past 24 hours.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the militants were killed and arrested during a series of operations carried out jointly by Afghan national police, Afghan national army and Afghan intelligence service in Ghazni, Ghor, Helmand, Kandahar, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Nangarhar and Uruzgan provinces.

The statement did not mention whether there were any casualties on the side of Afghan or foreign forces.

The Taliban have not yet confirmed any casualties and made no comments on the operation.

In addition, Afghan troops confiscated various types of light and heavy weapons along with munitions and explosives after the operations.

Afghan security forces also discovered and defused 15 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during operations in Balkh, Kandahar, Khost and Uruzgan provinces.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror.

The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country, despite the presence of thousands of US-led troops.

The Taliban recently announced the start of their "offensive" across Afghanistan and vowed to increase their attacks on US-led troops and Afghan forces.

The militant group added that attacks would target US military bases, diplomatic missions and vehicle convoys. It also warned that Afghan translators, government officials, politicians and judges would also be targeted before the US-led mission ends at the end of this year.
