WASHINGTON, June 14, 2014 – Millions of Afghan men and women went to the polls to choose their new president today, and officials of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force congratulated them in a statement released from the command's headquarters in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

"This successful election clearly demonstrates that Afghan people are confident in the security provided by their own forces and are optimistic about a future of progress and opportunity for Afghanistan," the statement said.

In the statement, officials commended the Afghan national security forces, who essentially conducted nonstop security operations since the April 5 runoff elections, noting that Afghan forces led all aspects of security, securing about 6,200 polling centers across the country. "This is a historic accomplishment," the ISAF statement said.

'Once again, the Afghan security forces have provided the Afghan people with the opportunity to vote," Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., ISAF commander, said. "And once again, the Afghan people have shown great courage and determination in casting their ballots.

"The professionalism and commitment of the Afghan forces was reflected in their applying lessons learned from the first round of elections," Dunford continued. "Their tireless and effective efforts to bring peace and security to the Afghan people and to support political transition give me great optimism for the future.'
