USS VELLA GULF, At Sea (NNS) -- Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) departed Constanta, Romania after a scheduled port visit, June 6.
Vella Gulf's visit to Romania reaffirmed the United States' commitment to strengthening ties with NATO allies and partners, while working toward mutual goals of promoting peace and stability in the region.
'Vella Gulf's officers and crew had an outstanding port visit in Romania,' said Capt. Robert Katz, Vella Gulf's commanding officer. 'This was an excellent opportunity to meet face-to-face with our naval counterparts, enhancing alliances and strengthening bonds. We have definitely forged new friendships and enduring relationships with our Romanian navy allies.'
While in Romania, Vella Gulf Sailors hosted U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and the fleet commander of the Romanian Navy, participated in a community outreach event at a local children's home, visited the Romanian Maritime Museum and toured the city of Constanta.
Hagel thanked the crew for their service and expressed his appreciation for the mission they are conducting.
Vella Gulf, homeported in Norfolk, Va., is deployed in a multi-mission role in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations to contribute to regional maritime security, conduct bilateral and multilateral training missions, and to support NATO operations and deployments throughout the region.
U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts a full range of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation missions in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other partners in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa.
