Beijing calls Hagel's claims of China 'inciting tensions' in S China Sea 'bullying'

31 May 2014, 17:22 -- China has harshly reacted to the statement of the US Minister of Defense, Chuck Hagel, who, according to the Chinese side, 'made threats', having accused China of inciting tensions in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, the asiaone.com portal reports.

Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA), Wang Guanzhong, called Chuck Hagel's statement unreasonable and condemned the fact that such words had been said in public in the presence of Defence Ministers, diplomats and security experts who took part in an annual summit of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

'His speech is full of arrogance, provocations, threats and bullying. The statements are absolutely non-constructive, offensive and also made in public. These accusations are groundless and unreasonable,' Wang Guanzhong said.

Deputy Chief of the General Staff also said that the summit, first of all, was aimed at promoting dialogue in the sphere of regional security between governments, and in this context, groundless accusations of China were inadmissible.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defence of Japan stated that the Chinese Russian-made Su-27 planes flew up on a dangerous distance of 30-50 meters to the Japanese YS-11 aircraft in the area, where air defence zones announced by the two countries were overlapping. For its part, China said that Japanese military had also conducted such maneuvers earlier.
