U.S. Department of Defense Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs) News Release

Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby provided the following readout:

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel met today with Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Lt. Gen. Wang Guanzhong.

The brief meeting took place on the sidelines of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, a major annual forum for key leaders in the Asia-Pacific region to discuss security challenges and opportunities.

The two leaders exchanged views about issues important to both the U.S. and China, as well as to the region.

Secretary Hagel reiterated the United States' position that all regional disputes be solved peacefully, through diplomacy and in keeping with international law. He encouraged China to foster more dialogue and deeper relationships with neighboring nations and pointed to PLA participation this year in the Rim of the Pacific exercise as an example of how such relationships can be improved.
