Thailand's military chief is meeting with advisers to map out a strategy to stabilize the country after last week's coup, an army source says.
A senior military officer, who declined to be named, told Reuters that coup leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha is devising with a team of advisers for the first time on Thursday a strategy to stabilize the security situation and shore up the shaky economy in the country a week after his ascent to power.
"General Prayuth has called his advisers for talks at 10 am," the source said.
"They will discuss the division of responsibilities, what they'll look after," he added.
Among the advisors, appointed on May 27, are former Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, and former army chief General Anupong Paochinda. The two are said to have close ties with Prayuth and helped oust the former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra back in 2006.
General Prayuth ousted the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin's younger sister, on May 22, following seven months of anti-government protests and violence in the country.
The army chief, who was endorsed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej as the nation's new ruler on May 26, has warned opponents not to criticize or protest, saying Thailand could revert to the "old days" of turmoil and street violence if they did.
Since seizing power, the military has detained over 200 people, many belonging to the former government. The military has also dissolved the country's senate and assumed its legislative powers.
