Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania plan to establish joint military unit
27 May 2014, 18:50 -- Cabinet has endorsed a draft agreement with Poland and Lithuania to set up a collaborative military unit, acting Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhailo Koval said Tuesday. 'We are going to sign this draft agreement and get down to work before long,' Koval said.
When asked if the deal could see the light of day within the next month, the defense minister responded 'I think yes, perhaps even sooner.'
The announcement came amid a build-up of NATO forces in Eastern Europe, with the military alliance ratcheting up the frequency of its air patrol missions and number of its warships in the Baltic and eastern Mediterranean.
In recent days, the region has been visited by the USS Truxton, Cook, and Taylor, and hosted an air force exercise, codenamed Dacian Viper, which involved US F-16 fighter jets.
