Readout of Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert O. Work's meeting with General Fang Fenghui

On May 15, Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert O. Work met with Gen. Fang Fenghui, China's chief of the General Staff at the Pentagon. Gen. Fang is visiting the United States at the invitation of Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

During their meeting, Deputy Secretary Work stressed to Gen. Fang the need to exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions with Vietnam in the South China Sea. He urged greater PLA participation in the U.S.-China Cyber Working Group, and noted that North Korea's provocations constitute a growing threat to the United States, to Japan, and to the Republic of Korea.

Both the deputy secretary and General Fang affirmed the importance of the U.S.-China military-to-military relationship, and both welcomed progress in developing a notification mechanism for major military activities and a set of standards of behavior for air and maritime activity as confidence-building mechanisms between the United States and China.
