Estonia ready to station NATO pursuit planes for 8 months – Estonia's DM
10 April 2014, 08:53 -- Estonia is ready to station NATO pursuit planes, Estonia's Minister of Defense Sven Mikser said. 'The fact that we station four NATO pursuit planes from Denmark is the good news as this will make other countries less eager to check Estonia's border security,' Mikser said to Postimees newspaper. He also said that Estonia could station the planes for only eight months.
Lithuania's Minister of Defense Juozas Olekas said on Wednesday that 12 pursuit planes will be securing the airspace of Baltic countries since May. He also said that Lithuania will station planes from Poland and Great Britain, while Estonia will receive Dutch planes.
'Since May 1, four additional Polish and British planes are to arrive in Lithuania and four Dutch planes in Estonia,' Juozas Olekas said.
Estonia has already expressed its readiness to station NATO planes on its airbase of Amari near Tallinn. The airbase is ready to station up to 16 pursuit planes and two or three transport planes. At the moment, the airbase lacks employees; however, it will function at full capacity next year.
