
US to prolong its warship's stay in Mediterranean due to Ukraine crisis
13 March 2014, 17:49 -- On Thursday, the Obama administration is expected to announce the Pentagon's plan to extend the presence of the carrier strike group led by the nuclear aircraft carrier George Bush in the Eastern Mediterranean in connection with the events in Crimea, the mediareport with reference to an informed source.
The decision to prolong the stay in the region of the George Bush, which was on its way to the Persian Gulf, is made in order to 'reassure NATO's allies' in the countries coterminous to Ukraine in connection with the events in Crimea, the source adds.
A source in the US power structures told the TV channel that the question of which military assets would remain in place and which would be relocated was currently under consideration. According to the military source, quoted by CNN, although the actions of the USA against Russia are concentrated in the diplomatic direction, the military component was also widely discussed at the meeting in the White House on March 11.
Speaking about the decision to extend the presence of the George Bush in the Mediterranean, a senior administration official told the TV channel that another show of muscle or additional military steps should not be expected until the referendum in Crimea scheduled for Sunday.
