Egypt's outgoing Housing Minister Ibrahim Mahlab says he has been asked to form a new government in the next few days, a media report says.
Mahlab said he has been named the country's new premier following a meeting with interim President Adly Mansour, Egypt's state owned Al-Ahram reported on its website Tuesday.
The new premier said he has been tasked with forming the new government "in three to four days," promising to improve services for Egyptians including tourism as well as to fight terrorism.
Mahlab was a civil engineer and a former official in deposed President Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party.
Critics say his choice of defense minister may reveal when army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will declare his expected bid for the presidency.
The announcement follows the resignation of Egyptian Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi cabinet on Monday.
The surprise resignation came amid a host of strikes over the handling of the economy and an acute shortage of gas in the North African country.
Beblawi was appointed on July 9, 2013 by Mansour after the military removed President Mohamed Morsi.
Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since the country's first democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi was ousted on July 3, 2013. Hundreds have lost their lives in the ensuing violence across the country.
Since then, Egypt's military-backed government has launched a bloody crackdown on Morsi's supporters and arrested thousands of Muslim Brotherhood members, including the party's senior leaders.
