TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry downplayed the UAE's request for referring the case of the three islands to the UN Security Council, and said the three islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Mousa belong to Iran.
'The three Iranian islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Mousa belong to Iran and it is a historical and undeniable reality,' Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said.
The UAE on Saturday requested that the item relating to the Iranian islands - be retained on the UN Security Council's agenda for 2014.
In a letter to the Secretary-General, the UAE Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh said the item should remain on the Council's agenda 'until such time as the dispute is resolved by peaceful means through direct negotiations or through the International Court of Justice, thereby ensuring a just, comprehensive and lasting settlement of the issue and achieving peace, security and regional and international stability.'
