Egyptian General al-Sisi to become presidential candidate?

7 February 2014, 07:03

Egyptian army said on Thursday that Kuwaiti newspaper misinterpreted remarks by Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi in which he said that he would run for president.

'If you would look in the streets of Egypt you'll see the intensity of campaign to get the people to beg and get General al-Sisi to become the candidate in the elections,' Ahmed Salah, a political activist and he is one of the organizers of the demonstrations in Tahrir square in Cairo, told The Voice of Russia.

Let's jump right into it. Egyptian army said on Thursday that Kuwaiti newspaper misinterpreted remarks by Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi in which he said that he would run for president. What is your opinion on this? Can you tell me a little bit more about this?

My opinion is very simple. If you would look in the streets of Egypt you'll see the intensity of campaign to get the people to beg and get General al-Sisi or Field Marshal al-Sisi as he poses himself now to become the candidate in the elections. The elections anyway are still in six months time, you would understand that there is a huge campaign using media and using every available means to get people to believe that he is our only salvation. He is our protector against terrorism; he is the one who is getting rid of the Muslim Brotherhood for us, and all of this. The Egyptian people hate the Muslim Brotherhood so much and the military had been using this patriot in order to try to make no other alternative but Sisi in order to save Egypt for the Egyptians. Otherwise Egypt will fall into chaos like Libya or Syria or Sudan, or Iraq. This is a deliberate campaign in a way that even any voices that would go against this campaign and I'm not talking about Brotherhood, I'm talking about revolutionaries, they would go to prison. And several colleagues have been put in jail among hundreds and thousands of others who had been arrested within the last few months since June, 30 apprising, which had been hijacked by the military afterwards exactly like the Muslim Brotherhood hijacked the earlier part of the revolution and reached power.

I'd like to go back to the comments that Field Marshal Sisi reportedly said, the Kuwaiti newspaper reported this that he would run for president. This means to me that there would be an election, in election there has to be some other candidates that are out here. You mentioned earlier that there is an intense campaign now to really push or form society's impression that Sisi is the only one. Are there any other candidates or any other people that could run against him?

There would be other candidates naturally. There would be the former Prime Minister of President Mubarak, his name is Ahmed Shafiq. He is a government candidate also who is representing NDP, the former regime of Mubarak ruling party. And there might be an opposition candidate.

Well, it seems that there is a few people out there. Sisi has been widely expected to declare his candidacy, but there has been no official confirmation from the army, which said that he would only announce such a decision to the Egyptian people. In your opinion, do you feel that Sisi announcing this decision is just a matter of time? Is it a precursor him coming out?

I think it is a matter of time but it is strategically wrong to make such a decision as early as now so it is going to have to wait a little bit until they are sure that they are going to push Sisi to become a candidate or does he need someone else to be the candidate for now. So this person tries to solve few issues and then Sisi gets to power afterwards and then becomes the President for as long as they want. So its about choosing whether it is going to be now or maybe later and that means they will have to wait and see a little bit more.

If Sisi does declare his candidacy for presidency, would it contribute to the political standoff in Egypt or will that call things down a little bit?

The whole thing is manufactured, it is all fabricated and that means that very soon people will see how false the campaign was that they were being brainwashed by and they would also start to rebelling against that. And because of that particular reason the current regime which is praising the road for military, and for Sisi is trying to eliminate as much as possible any voice of opposition as possible even by arresting even revolutionaries.
