Afghan security forces have killed at least 16 Taliban militants during their clean-up operations across the war-weary country.
Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the militants were killed in large-scale security operations in Nangarhar, Logar, Ghazni, Paktia, Herat and Nimroz provinces over the past 24 hours.
"In the past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several anti-terrorism joint operations with Afghan National Army and National Directorate of Security (NDS) to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan," the ministry said in the statement.
Several militants were also injured during the raids on their hideouts across the troubled region, the statement added.
It, however, did not mention whether there were any casualties on the side of Afghan or foreign forces. The Taliban militant group has not yet commented on these developments.
Militant groups have recently warned of a fresh wave of attacks against foreign troops, Afghan security forces and government officials. They say the operations will focus on military centers, places of gatherings, airbases, and military convoys.
The militant group has said it would use 'every possible tactic' to inflict casualties on Afghan and US-led forces. They specifically mentioned insider attacks, and bomb attacks.
The announcement prompted Afghan authorities to beef up security in major cities across the country, including the capital city of Kabul.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan as part of Washington's so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but the country is still gripped by insecurity.
