Manila, Nov. 29 (CNA) A Republic of China Navy vessel arrived in Cebu in central Philippines on Friday carrying 530 tons of relief supplies and equipment to help victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
The tank-landing craft "Chung He" was guided into port by two Philippine naval ships, after which the supplies were unloaded and handed over formally at a ceremony hosted by Taiwan's deputy representative to the Philippines Chang Tai-lai.
The supplies included canned food, rice, water, clothes, tents, generators, excavation machinery and prefabricated houses.
The shipment followed airlifts of more than 150 tons of goods over the past weeks to help typhoon victims in devastated areas of the Philippines.
Alongside the relief supplies, Taiwan's government also donated US$200,000 to the Philippines in the wake of the typhoon, which ripped through central Philippines Nov. 8 leaving thousands dead and tens of thousands displaced.
Also on Friday, Taiwan Fertilizer Co. purchased 36,000 kilograms of domestically grown cabbage that will be exported to the Philippines for charity sale to help victims of the typhoon.
The company has already donated NT$2.14 million worth of bottled water to the relief effort.
