Taipei, Nov. 12 (CNA) Charitable organizations in Taiwan showed a quick response to the government's call to contribute to disaster relief in the Philippines, contributing NT$50 million (US$1.6 million)-worth of supplies in a single day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.
Based on the needs of the Philippine government, Taiwan will send the supplies, weighing in at nearly 100 metric tons so far, by air as soon as possible, MOFA said in a press release. Taiwan will foot the NT$70-million bill for transportation costs.
Both President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Jiang Yi-huah have expressed their concern over the destruction left by Typhoon Haiyan and have instructed MOFA and the Ministry of National Defense to work alongside non-government organizations to collect relief supplies, the press release said.
Two Air Force C-130 cargo planes took off in the afternoon, carrying 15 tons of tents, blankets and rations to the central Philippine city of Cebu.
Taiwanese businessmen in the Philippines have also stepped up to donate 200 tons of rice to the stricken area. The Taiwan government earlier donated US$200,000 to the relief effort through its representative office in Manila.
