Japan says it would supply the British Royal Navy with engine parts as the sales are not in breach of Tokyo’s arms exports policy, media reports said.
The sale of the gas turbine parts has been approved by the Japanese government, which claims the parts are not deemed weapons as they are used in civilian aircraft and emergency generators as well as naval ships, the business daily Nikkei and Kyodo News reported.
According to the reports, Japanese company Kawasaki Heavy Industries produces engine parts for Rolls-Royce, and then supplies them to the Royal Navy.
The engine parts have been manufactured by the Japanese firm for the Japanese naval defence force and other users under license from the British firm, Kyodo News said.
The production of the materials has long been halted by Rolls-Royce, but amid the Royal Navy’s need for replacements the company has asked Kawasaki Heavy Industries to provide it with the engine parts.
Japan is re-considering its policy against arms sales as far as dual-use technology exports are concerned both to help boost Tokyo’s defence industry output and reduce production costs.
The country banned weapons sales to communist states, countries sanctioned by the UN and those involved in wars and international conflicts as per a policy adopted in 1967 and tightened in 1976.
