Brother Arrested Over Kidnapping Of Afghan Female Lawmaker
October 03, 2013
Afghanistan's intelligence service says it believes the kidnapping of a female lawmaker this summer was orchestrated by her own bother.
The National Directorate of Security (NDS) said on October 2 that Noor Ahmad had been arrested on charges of being a key accomplice behind the kidnapping of his sister, Fariba Ahmadi Kakar.
NDS spokesman General Farid said that "money and some family issues may have been the motive."
The NDS released a video of Ahmad making a tearful confession.
He said he was ordered to assist with the kidnapping by the Taliban.
Kakar, a deputy from the southern province of Kandahar, was kidnapped by Taliban militants in mid-August while traveling in the central Afghan province of Ghazni.
She was released on September 7 in exchange for six relatives of Taliban officials being held by the government.
