Pakistani, Indian military officers to reduce border tensions

ISLAMABAD, Oct 3, IRNA -- Pakistani and Indian military officials will meet soon to explore options to lessen border tensions in the disputed Kashmir region, the Foreign Ministry Thursday said.
Tensions recently escalated along the Line of Control, which divides the two countries in Kashmir region, following exchange of fire by troops of both countries.
They accuse each other of violation of the ceasefire.
The Pakistani and Indian Prime Ministers in their meeting in New York agreed to take immediate steps to stabilize situation on the Line of Control, Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said.
He said the meeting of the Director General for Military Operations was decided in their recent talks in New York.
“Immediate effect of the meeting was agreement that both Directors General for Military Operations will meet soon to discuss ways to avoid escalations,” he said.
He said the two Prime Ministers discussed wide range of issues‚ including Kashmir‚ water‚ terrorism‚ and to determine maritime boundaries.
The spokesman said Pakistan has a clear stance on Kashmir dispute and “we believe it must be resolved according to the aspirations of Kashmiri people and United Nations resolutions.”
On a question about the alleged Indian involvement in the instability of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province‚ he said whenever Pakistan and India will talk on composite dialogue‚ Pakistan will raise this issue.
India has always denied any hand in the terrorism in Balochistan.
The Foreign Ministry described Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to New York and said he met with eighteen Prime Ministers and heads of state during the visit.
He said a good beginning has been made on drone strikes as international public opinion against it has started developing.
The spokesman while replying to a question about the U.S. refusal to stop drone strikes, Aizaz Chaudhry said drones strikes fan terrorism and Pakistan has shown always resistance against them.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif telephoned Afghan President Hamid Karzai Thursday and discussed Pakistan-Afghan relations and efforts to enhance cooperation for establishing peace in the region, state radio reported.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan will continue to play its role for stability and progress of Afghanistan.
He termed the Prime Minister’s visit to New York as very successful and said he apprised the international community of Pakistans priorities, radio Pakistan reported.
