Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood has called for fresh protests across the North African country as an arrest warrant has been issued for a top cleric.
In a Thursday statement, the group urged Egyptians to hold week-long anti-government demonstrations starting on Friday.
Large numbers of the movement’s supporters are expected to participate in the rallies.
In recent months, Egypt’s military has launched a severe crackdown on the members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
More than 2,000 members of the Brotherhood have been arrested since the military ouster of Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in early July, among them the movement’s supreme leader, Mohamed Badie.
About 1,000 people were killed in a week of violence between Morsi supporters and security forces after police dispersed their protest camps in a deadly operation on August 14.
The massacre sparked international condemnation and prompted world bodies to call for an independent investigation into the violence.
Meanwhile, reports say Egypt’s prosecutor general has issued an arrest warrant for the country’s top cleric, Yusuf al-Qaradawi.
The Qatar-based cleric is accused of inciting the killing of Egyptian security forces and meddling in the country’s affairs.
Qaradawi has been a vocal critic of the country’s army following the ouster of Morsi.
