The head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in northern Afghanistan’s Kunduz Province has been killed by unknown gunmen, local officials say.

According to provincial security chief General Ibadullah Talwar, Amanullah Aman was shot by gunmen riding on a motorcycle, early Wednesday.

The Afghan official reportedly died from his wounds after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Officials say Aman came under attack in front of his house.

"Aman was shot dead in the morning in front of his house as he was leaving for his office," Kunduz provincial spokesman Enayatullah Khaliq said.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack in Kunduz, Taliban militants are usually behind such instances of violence against government officials.

The attackers managed to flee the scene before policemen reached the area. An investigation has been launched.

The attack comes as authorities have begun accepting nominations for presidential and provincial council seats.

On September 16, an Afghan policewoman was killed in an attack in the southern province of Helmand.

Two Afghan policemen were killed in a roadside bomb attack in the eastern province of Laghman, on September 15.

Unidentified gunmen abducted a female member of the Afghan parliament Fariba Ahmadi Kakar along with her children in the province of Ghazni back in August.

Violence continues to plague Afghanistan despite the presence of thousands of foreign forces, more than a decade after the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.
