NORFOLK, Va. -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic awarded a $14 million contract for a transportation facility, warehouse and armory at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown to Hourigan Construction Corp. of Virginia Beach August 30.

According to Jenny Britt, the project manager, this project will support the consolidation of three Marine Fleet-Anti Terrorism (FAST) companies at the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment at Yorktown.

"This consolidation will improve their mission capabilities," she adds.

Britt says the design staff at NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic designed all three buildings in house, a complex task that balances site issues and coordination with other buildings at Yorktown.

"They put a lot of effort into this project and did an awesome job," said Britt.

She says the armory includes multiple issue ports in company cages for faster distribution and return of weapons and equipment, moveable equipment racks and a low humidity climate control system designed to make the weapons and equipment last longer.

The project also has several sustainable features designed to improve energy efficiency including energy efficient HVAC, translucent wall systems to maximize day lighting, and a light colored roof that reflects heat.

According to Britt, the project will begin later this year and should be completed in early 2015.
