Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters have staged fresh mass rallies across Egypt in support of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi.

Large crowds of pro-Morsi demonstrators gathered in Nasr City and Mohandiseen in the capital, Cairo, as well as in Giza and several governorates in the Nile Delta on Friday afternoon.

Morsi’s supporters amassed in Cairo and other major cities for a million-man march to renew calls for the reinstatement of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi.

The army-backed government has beefed up security around the capital and warned protesters of a harsh crackdown if they attack any government building.

Latest reports say security forces fired tear gas to disperse protesters gathering at Cairo's Sphinx Square.

Early on Friday, unidentified assailants opened fire on a police unit in Heliopolis neighborhood of Cairo, killing at least one officer and a civilian. Another police officer was injured in the attack.

At least seven people were injured after Egyptian security forces opened fire on supporters of Morsi, demanding his reinstatement during a rally in the northern city of al-Mansoura. Fierce clashes also erupted between security forces and pro-Morsi protesters in Egypt's Nile Delta city of Tanta.

Meanwhile, angry supporters of Morsi also marched through Egypt's second largest city of Alexandria on Friday afternoon.

The fresh rallies come after Essam el-Erian, vice chairman of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, called for mass nationwide rallies on Friday.

“I call on the Egyptian people to protest on Friday Aug. 30 to bring down the bloody military coup,” el-Erian said on Thursday.

The government of army-appointed interim President Adly Mansour has launched a fierce crackdown on the supporters of the ousted president and arrested at least 2,000 Muslim Brotherhood members, including the party’s supreme guide, Mohamed Badie, who was detained on August 20.
