Czech Parliament Votes To Dissolve, Paving Way For Snap Election
August 20, 2013
Czech lawmakers have voted to dissolve parliament, paving the way for an early election.
The move puts an end to a political crisis triggered by the collapse in June of the center-right coalition government over a corruption scandal.
In the August 20 vote, 140 lawmakers in the 200-seat lower house backed the proposal to dissolve parliament, which had been tabled by three major political parties.
It was the first ever such decision by Czech lawmakers.
President Milos Zeman now has to formally approve the dissolution and set an election day to follow within 60 days.
He has already proposed calling the vote for October 25-26.
The next regular election had been scheduled for May 2014.
