Morsi Supporters March in Defiance of Army Warning
08:52 29/07/2013 MOSCOW, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - Thousands of supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi marched towards military facilities in the Egyptian capital Cairo despite a warning by the army, Western media said on Monday.
The Egyptian army has earlier issued a statement demanding protestors to keep away from the Defense Ministry’s facilities.
The march began near the Morsi loyalist camp around the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, where dozens of people were killed on Saturday. According to the Egyptian Health Ministry, 72 people were killed and 292 injured in Cairo, while eight people were killed and at least 194 injured in Alexandria.
Egypt's National Defence council has earlier warned supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi that security forces would take "decisive and firm decisions and actions in response to any violations," Al Jazeera said.
The Egyptian army deposed Morsi, who narrowly won the country’s first free presidential election last June with 51.7 percent of the vote, following mass nationwide protests against the rule of the Islamist president.
His current whereabouts remain unknown, but he is rumored to be transferred soon to a Cairo prison where former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak is being held.
