Several Killed In Bombings In Afghanistan's Restive South

July 29, 2013

Afghan authorities say 14 people have died in two separate bombings in southern Afghanistan. The first bombing occurred in Zabul Province late on July 26, killing 11 and wounding 20 people.

Local officials say the dead included a senior police official, two local policemen, and eight civilians. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The second bombing took place on the morning of July 27 in Kandahar Province and killed three people -- a mother and her two children.

President Hamid Karzai's office condemned both bombings.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Defense Ministry said 83 militants were killed and 18 arrested during a week-long security operation in the east that ended on July 27.

Violence has been escalating in the country recently as foreign troops continue their drawdown from Afghanistan.
