Suicide Bomber Kills 2 in Somalia

July 12, 2013

by VOA News

At least two people are dead in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, after a suicide bomber attacked a convoy of African Union troops.

Officials say those killed in Friday's attack were civilians. At least two other people were reported injured.

Witnesses say the bomber was driving a car packed with explosives directly toward the convoy, when the blast occurred.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack, but the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab rebels often stage similar attacks in a bid to overthrow Somalia's internationally-backed government.

African Union forces pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu in 2011, but the group still retains key strongholds in rural southern Somalia and continues to carry out attacks in the capital.
