At least two people have been killed in a powerful explosion and the ensuing gunfire near the heavily-fortified Mogadishu International Airport, Somali security officials say.

The deadly incident happened after a bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into a convoy of African Union troops on Friday.

Following the explosion, several heavily-armed gunmen entered the troubled area and opened fire.

However, security forces said the situation is under control and pro-government forces have secured the area near the airport.

The forces, known as AMISOM, have been deployed to the war-torn country since 2007 to battle al-Shabab fighters.

The attack comes nearly three weeks after 15 people were killed in an attack on the main UN compound in the Somali capital. Local security officials said the bomber blew up explosives at the entrance gate of the UN Development Program (UNDP) office on June 19, 2013

Somalia’s local al-Shabab fighters often claim responsibility for deadly attacks. The Somali capital has been the scene of frequent attacks since fighters were driven out of the city two years ago.
