The Israeli regime says it is prepared to ?immediately’ construct 10,000 illegal settler units in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem) in an attempt to lower housing costs.

Israeli Minister for Construction and Housing Uri Ariel said on Wednesday, “To immediately alleviate the housing crisis we must massively build in (east) Jerusalem (al-Quds) and the settlement blocs” in the occupied West Bank.

He further said that the new homes must be built in the illegal settlements of Beit Arye, Ofarim and Elkana and added, “We are prepared to launch 10,000 units there immediately.”

The Israeli minister also called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resolve the regime’s housing crisis by approving the projects.

The Tel Aviv regime continues expanding its illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories despite international criticism against the move.

On June 26, Israel approved final plans to construct nearly 70 new settler units in East al-Quds. The units will be built in Har Homa, an illegal settlement neighborhood in the southern sector of the city.

More than half a million Israelis live in over 120 illegal settlements built since Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds in 1967.

The settlements are considered illegal by the international community as the territories were captured by Israel and are hence subject to the Geneva Conventions, which forbid construction on occupied land.

The United States, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has supported the Israeli regime on several occasions by vetoing resolutions against Tel Aviv.

The Palestinian Authority has said it will not return to talks with Israel unless the regime completely freezes settlement construction.
