French President Francois Hollande says Paris has made new proposals for supplying military equipment to Qatar.

“I made new proposals for air, land and naval defense. I am quite confident that we will make progress in each of these areas,” Hollande said in an interview with Qatar's state news agency QNA on Sunday.

“We supply light and modern arms to the Qatari army,” he added.

During a news conference in capital Doha, Hollande said “The companies which accompanied me explained the quality of their products and in particular, on Rafale (fighter planes made by French aircraft manufacturer Dassault), the opportunity there would be for Qatar to buy these planes.”

Rafale is a twin-engine delta-wing fighter aircraft with semi-stealth capabilities.

The French president was in Doha to take part in meeting of the so-called Friends of Syria, which was held on Saturday.

Top diplomats from Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States attended the talks and agreed to “provide urgently all the necessary materiel and equipment” to the foreign-backed militants fighting against the government of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence.
