YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Commander, Navy Region Japan (CNRJ) held a ceremony for the reopening of the renovated Regional Operations Center (ROC) at Region Japan headquarters June 24.

"We have a great new capability here," said Commander, Navy Region Japan, Rear Adm. Dan Cloyd, during the opening ceremony. "A lot of people put in a lot of time and effort to make this happen and now you, the watch team, and the fleet and families here will be the beneficiaries of that hard work."

The ROC recently underwent approximately $4.5 million in renovation and upgrades, increasing it to a 48-seat operations center with improved emergency management capabilities. The project began with three years of planning and took one year to complete.

"This new operations center will allow us to better handle any emergency situation, for example, a last minute evacuation of region installation or Korean peninsula military personnel and family members," said Joe Dupaty, CNRJ's regional information systems anti-terrorism and force protection lead. "Those personnel and their families would all filter through our region installations and we now have the capability to successfully manage such an incident."

The ROC is a national incident management system-compliant operations center and is a key regional asset during times of crisis. CNFJ's ROC serves as the focal point for the coordination of all crisis-related emergency management issues for all Navy installations in Japan and Korea.

The mission of the ROC is to support the installation emergency operations centers and is responsible for monitoring, identifying, filtering, coordinating, processing, and resolving issues affecting region personnel, families and facilities in times of emergency, increased tension, open hostilities, or exercises.
