Two Killed in Mozambique By Suspected Former Rebels

Gunmen have ambushed two vehicles along Mozambique's main highway, days after former rebel group Renamo warned it would paralyze the road and a key rail line.

State-run Radio Mozambique reports that two people were killed and at least one person wounded in Friday's attacks, which targeted a bus and a van traveling in central Sofala province.

Renamo has not claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The group, which is Mozambique's main opposition party, said this week that it would block traffic on the EN national highway and the economically crucial Sena railway.

Renamo says the government is not sharing the spoils of an ongoing natural resource boom. It also says soldiers are plotting to attack Renamo's president.

In March, a skirmish between the police and Renamo resulted in three civilian deaths.

Unknown gunmen opened fire on buses and vehicles traveling the national road, the same stretch Renamo is now threatening to disrupt.

Renamo fought Mozambique's current ruling party, Frelimo, during a 15-year civil war that ended in 1992.

The country has been mostly peaceful since then but tension between the two groups continues. Last October, Renamo's leader Afonso Dhlakama set up camp in a remote mountain area, raising fears that Renamo was returning to military tactics.
