Hungarian Prosecutors Charge Nazi War Crimes Suspect

June 18, 2013

Hungarian prosecutors have charged a 98-year-old man with war crimes committed during World War II.

Laszio Csatary is suspected of organizing the deportation of some 15,700 Jews to Ukraine and the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz between 1941 and 1944.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center that seeks Nazi war criminals involved in perpetrating the Holocaust says Csatary was a senior Hungarian police officer in charge Kosice ghetto in what is now Slovakia.

A spokeswoman for the Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office, Bettina Bagoly, said Csatary's case should go to trial within three months.

Csatary was sentenced in absentia to death by a court in Czechoslovakia in 1948.

He fled to Canada after World War II but returned to Hungary about 15 years ago and was only found and apprehended in July.
