A director of the Myanmar Peace Center says Myanmar’s government has announced a preliminary ceasefire agreement with rebels in the northern state of Kachin.

“The agreement is to stop fighting at this point and afterwards there are going to be detailed discussions about the repositioning of troops,” Min Zaw Oo said after meeting with government officials and representatives from the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) on Thursday.

The seven-point peace agreement was reached on the last day of three-day talks in the city of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State.

The deal allows for additional political discussions, a reduction or termination of conflicts, the formation of a monitoring committee, resettlement of displaced people, continued meetings on the repositioning of troops and a KIO post in Myitkyina.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the deal.

Ban said he hopes “this agreement will allow the two parties to address the concerns and needs of the people of Kachin State.”

On January 18, the government announced a ceasefire with the KIO in preparation for the peace talks.

In June 2011, a 17-year truce between the government and the KIO broke down and led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people in Kachin.
