Daghestan Eliminates Direct Election Of Republic's Leader
May 30, 2013
Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan has eliminated direct elections for the republic's leader.
Daghestan's parliament has passed a law that provides for the head of the republic to be elected by lawmakers.
Earlier this month, the People's Assembly of another of Russia's North Caucasus republics -- Ingushetia -- put forward a draft law according to which the republic's top official should be elected by legislators.
Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing for leaders of regions and autonomous republics to be chosen by legislators rather than voters.
