Afghan armed forces have foiled a potentially devastating attack on Kabul and seized a large quantity of weapons, security sources say.
Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a statement on Wednesday that its forces carried out a raid on a militant hideout, killing one and arresting six others.
The raid was carried out on a garage in the Khair Khana area of Kabul.
Afghan officials said the would-be attackers are believed to belong to the Pakistan- based militant Haqqani network. The Haqqani group, which has links to al-Qaeda, has carried out a string of deadly attacks across Afghanistan.
The NDS said it recovered a hoard of arms and ammunitions, including five vests of explosives, machine guns and grenades.
Kabul and several other main cities have come under several major attacks over the past few weeks.
Taliban militants recently announced the start of their annual “spring offensive” against US-led and Afghan forces, vowing a new wave of attacks across Afghanistan.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.
