At least one security guard has been killed and several others, including a foreign national, have sustained injuries after Taliban militants targeted a Red Cross office in the volatile eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, security sources say.
Initial reports from Afghan security officials said the Wednesday attack followed a large explosion; however, the source of the blast is not yet known.
Witnesses said the Red Cross building was on fire shortly after the blast, and gunfire could be heard.
No person or group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, Taliban militants are usually blamed for similar attacks.
Taliban militants recently announced the start of their annual "spring offensive" against US-led and Afghan forces, vowing a new wave of attacks across Afghanistan.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops.
