A top US national security official has called for deeper military ties with China in areas such as fighting piracy, disaster relief and peacekeeping amid mounting tensions between the two global rivals on security issues.

White House National Security Adviser Tom Donilon reportedly made the remarks during a Tuesday meeting in Beijing with China’s top military leader Fan Changlong, nearly two weeks before the presidents of the two nations are due to hold summit talks in US state of California, Reuters reports.

Donilon said the two governments should cooperate to face “non-traditional security challenges,” namely disaster relief, peacekeeping and counter piracy.

"An essential part of building a new model for relations between great powers is ensuring we have a healthy, stable and reliable military to military relationship," Donilon said he told Fan at the China’s ministry of defense, in brief comments to reporters.

Donilon also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, during which Xi reportedly said US-China relations were at "an important stage connecting the past and the future."

However, neither side elaborated on the numerous sensitive areas President Xi and US President Barack Obama plan to discuss in their June meeting, including the intensifying tensions on the Korean peninsula and a persisting exchange of cyber attack allegations between two governments.

The Sino-US presidential summit is set to take place on June 7-8 at an expansive California estate called Sunnylands, located southeast of Palm Springs.
