Taipei, May 15 (CNA) Taiwan's representative to the Philippines Raymond Wang returned to Taiwan Wednesday evening amid increasing row with the Philippines following the May 9 fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman in the two countries' overlapping waters.

Wang, who was being recalled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, arrived at 7:50 p.m. at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

In response to reporters' questions, Wang said he will first report to the ministry before making a statement.

The ministry recalled Wang as part of the sanction measures against the Philippines announced by the government early Wednesday.

The government demanded that the Philippine representative to Taiwan, Antonio I. Basilio, return to the Philippines to help deal with the incident and froze the hiring of Filipino workers in Taiwan.

Basilio was set to leave Taiwan on Thursday.

The Cabinet announced Wednesday evening a second wave of sanctions, including issuing a red travel alert for the Philippines and suspending high-level exchanges, such as a ministerial-level meeting at the World Health Assembly next week, after the Philippines failed to meet the four demands made by the Taiwan government.

The demands asked the Philippines to issue a formal apology, compensate the victim's family, investigate the case and punish those responsible, and begin fishery talks with Taiwan.
