Turkish military says an F-16 fighter jet that went missing earlier this day, has crashed in the southern part of the country near the Syria border, Turkish media reports.

Turkish military noted in a statement on Monday that it lost contact with the F-16 jet over a mountainous area in Osmaniye Province, 50 kilometers from the Syria border.

The plane had taken off from a base in northern Amasya Province.

Turkish military sources say contact with the pilot was lost after he called in to say he was ejecting. Search and rescue operations are under way for the missing pilot.

However, Turkey's NTV television said the pilot ejected safely from the plane, though there has been no confirmation of that report.

Turkish military sources say the crash was likely an accident.
