Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) held an exercise on Taichung Harbor in central Taiwan Saturday to demonstrate its capability in defending Taiwan's sovereignty and fishing rights and maintaining maritime safety.

In heavy rain, CGA personnel carried out the exercise, which included a troop inspection ceremony at the No. 43 wharf of the port, marine and air march-past routines, a special services speed boat drill, and a marine emergency response drill.

President Ma Ying-jeou observed the exercise in person, during which two stun grenades were released from a speed boat on the seas off the port.

The exercise, codenamed Hai An No. 7, was held after a Taiwanese fishing boat was hit by gun shots from a Philippine government vessel Thursday in overlapping waters of Taiwan's and the Philippines' exclusive economic zones.

A Taiwanese fisherman was killed during the shooting.
