Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has dismissed and retired Air Force Commander General Mohammed al-Ayesh by royal decree.
The monarch then named General Fayadh bin Hamed al-Rowaili on Friday as the successor to al-Ayesh.
Deputy Defense Minister Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz was also dismissed by royal decree on April 21, 2013. Prince Fahd, who was commander of Saudi naval forces since 2002, succeeded him.
Prince Khaled was appointed deputy defense minister in November 2011, a month after the death of his father Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, who had served as defense minister for five decades.
Some reports said Prince Khaled was expected to succeed his father, but his uncle Crown Prince Salman was appointed to the post.
