Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to revive stalled negotiations over a peace treaty between Tokyo and Moscow.
Abe said in a press conference in Tokyo on Monday that he would discuss with the Russian president ways to resolve territorial disputes that remain unsettled since World War II.
“I will work on boosting Japan-Russia relations so that this visit will mark a restart in stalled negotiations over a peace treaty,” the Japanese premier stated before his departure for the Russian capital, Moscow.
Abe also stated that he would try to build a “trusted personal relationship with President Putin” during his three-day official visit.
Japan and Russia have been at odds for decades over the ownership of the Kuril Islands in the Pacific.
The archipelago of some 56 islands, which are home to about 19,000 people, has been controlled by Moscow since being seized by the Soviet troops in 1945.
All of the islands are under Russian jurisdiction, but Japan claims that the four southernmost islands are part of its territory.
