US-led forces have killed an influential tribal elder, Haji Merza Jan Mangal, and arrested four members of his family during a night raid in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktia Province Press TV reports.

According to the report, Mangal’s wife was also wounded in the attack which took place early Wednesday.

Following the raid, hundreds of local villagers staged a protest, condemning the killing and the arrests by the US-led forces.

According to tribal leaders, US-led foreign troops storm Afghan people’s homes and take them to unknown places without coordination with local authorities.

Night raids by the US-led forces have resulted in civilian casualties and increasing tension between Washington and Kabul.

Many civilians have lost their lives in the US-led operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past months, with Afghans becoming increasingly outraged at the seemingly endless number of the deadly assaults.

The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism.

The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but years into the invasion, insecurity continues to rise across the country despite the presence of thousands of foreign troops in the war-weary nation.

The US-led war in Afghanistan, which has caused record-high civilian and military casualties, has become the longest military conflict in the American history.
