Maduro Declared Winner In Venezuela
April 15, 2013
Electoral officials in Venezuela have announced that Hugo Chavez's chosen successor has won the country's presidential election in a close vote.
Nicolas Maduro beat Henrique Capriles by only about 300,000 votes in the April 14 election, according to the figures.
The margin was 50.8 percent to 49.1 percent.
Speaking to supporters after his announced election victory, Maduro said he would welcome a recount of election results to leave no doubt of his victory.
Capriles said he would not accept the result until every vote is recounted.
Maduro campaigned on a promise to continue what Chavez called "21st-century socialism," with much government spending on the poor and state control over the economy.
Capriles claimed the late president's regime has put Venezuela on the road to ruin.
Chavez died last month after a long battle with cancer.
