Afghan Parliament Speaker's Relatives Among Dead In Konduz Bombing

March 14, 2013

by RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan

KABUL -- Afghan officials say relatives of the speaker of the Afghan parliament's lower house might have been targeted by a suicide bomber in Konduz Province.

The governor of the Imam Sahib district said on March 13 that the speaker, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, who is an ethnic Uzbek, lost his brother, father, nephew, and possibly a cousin in the attack.

The March 13 bombing killed 11 people and injured at least 13.

The district police chief was also among the wounded.

The suicide bomber struck after a buzkashi match, an Afghan and Central Asian sport similar to polo but played with a goat carcass instead of a ball.

Buzkashi tournaments are held across northern Afghan regions close to Central Asian countries on the eve of Norouz, the Persian New Year marked in March on the spring equinox.
