YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea, March 14, 2013 – The Army's top operational command in Korea is training for its primary mission as a combined and joint task force headquarters during Exercise Key Resolve 2013.
The 8th Army transitioned from its previous role as an Army service component command to a field army early last year, and U.S. Army Pacific assumed 8th Army's service component role as part of Pacific integration.
During the annual computer simulation exercise, which began March 11 and ends March 21, 8th Army is operating out of a mobile command post.
"Key Resolve enables us to train for our primary mission," said Maj. Gen. Walter M. Golden, 8th Army deputy commanding general for operations. "It ensures we are ready to confront and defeat a wide variety of threats."
Golden said 8th Army will play a key role during the exercise, which also includes U.S. troops from the United States.
"This exercise improves our ability to defend freedom on the Korean Peninsula and maintain stability in the region," Golden said. "And it demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the Republic of Korea-United States alliance."
Key Resolve takes place around the same time every year. It is conducted during the same timeframe as Exercise Foal Eagle, a combined and joint field training exercise that runs across the Korean Peninsula from March 1 to April 30.
