At least two US soldiers and 7 Afghan troops have been killed in a green-on-blue attack in Afghanistan’s Maidan Wardak province, Press TV reports.
The incident took place on Monday after an Afghan police officer burst into a joint meeting between US special forces and Afghan commandos and fired a machine gun.
At least 23 others were wounded in the incident.
Afghanistan’s interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi confirmed the news, and said the location was Jalrez district in Wardak. He added that a group of Afghan officials were sent from Kabul to investigate the incident.
It came after the end of a two-week ultimatum by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to remove a US elite force from the province accusing them of fueling "insecurity and instability."
On March 8, Afghan officers attacked a US military base in the eastern province of Kapisa, killing a contractor.
Monday's incident is the latest of the so-called green on blue attacks, which see Afghan troops turn their guns on the US-led forces.
The anti-US sentiments among Afghan security forces are becoming a major threat in the war Washington and its allies have been leading in Afghanistan since their 2001 invasion of the country.
The attacks have increased dramatically in the past two years, accounting for 15 percent of the deaths of US-led forces in 2012.
