Serbia-Kosovo Talks Start In Brussels
March 04, 2013
The European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has begun the sixth round of EU-mediated talks between Serbia and Kosovo by meeting separately with Kosoar Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic in Brussels.
All three are due to hold joint discussions later on March 4 on potential arrangements for governing ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo.
Kosovo’s Albanian majority declared independence from Serbia in 2008, a move that Belgrade and most of Kosovo's tens of thousands of ethnic Serbs reject.
The Serbian leadership expressed "determination to reach a compromise," after meeting on March 3 to discuss Belgrade's position on ethnic Serb-populated municipalities in northern Kosovo.
Belgrade insists the municipalities should have their own jurisdiction over the police, judiciary, and education.
Kosovo opposes the demand saying the request undermines the constitution and internal order.
