NAVAL AIR STATION JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- The 'Nomads' of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 62 returned Feb. 13, after 10 weeks in Navy Central Command (NAVCENTCOM) Area of Responsibility.
The Nomads flew 39 missions in 10 weeks of detached operations with one aircraft and a crew of 22 maintainers and aircrew.
The detachment was comprised of Selected Reserve and Full Time Support Sailors. The Nomads fly high-priority missions supporting Combined Task Force 53 in CENTCOM. The Nomads provided fast and flexible transport in the high-stress environment of the CENTCOM AOR delivering more than 1.3 million pounds of high-priority cargo.
The VR-62 Nomads have two basic missions while in NAVCENT, meeting the logistics needs of the battle group and contingency missions to meet the ever-changing needs of the AOR on a 'go now' basis.
'We love both missions,' said Senior Chief Naval Air Crewman (Mechanical) Mike Wendelin. 'Production missions are great for training a new cadre of loadmasters and flight engineers, and the 'go now' missions are just a great source of satisfaction that the Nomads can accomplish any request anytime.'
During this period, VR-62 transported the commanding officer of CTF 53, Capt. Glen Leverette. They delivered Seabees to Afghanistan, and they also picked up last minute logistics requests for various operations and exercises, and moved the holiday mail.
'Our purpose is to provide the most flexible, responsive and effective air logistics capability to the world's most powerful Navy,' said VR-62 commanding officer Cmdr. Tony Scarpino. 'I am really excited about and proud of the work we are doing in NAVCENT and around the world.'
VR-62 is one of five Navy Reserve C-130 squadrons serving the Navy's global logistics needs and is home-based at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.
